The Michigan State Health authorities have revealed two deaths associated with Cyclospora in the United States. Both victims had existing conditions that were complicated due to dehydration resulting from the intestinal disease. With an ongoing nationwide outbreak of the microscopic parasite causing infection in the intestines, more than 20,000 cases have been identified so far. According to federal health authorities, at least 1,947 cases of the outbreak and 98 hospitalizations can be attributed to infected Mexican lettuce sold in Taco Bell restaurants in nine states. Even though the condition often results in watery and explosive diarrhea and rarely leads to death, more investigations are being conducted for other possible means of distribution and infection.
